Gratitude Spiral: Day 329

Today, I’m grateful for gathering green tomatoes before the frost.

Mornings have indeed been frosty, so it was time to pick what I could and let them ripen indoors. The only question now is who’s going to eat them all when they ripen?! 🙂

Today, I’m grateful for the colors I see on my daily walk.

I’m grateful that I don’t need to step far from home to take in the colors that autumn brings right to my own neighborhood.

Gratitude Spiral: Day 323

Today, I’m grateful for autumn colors in New England.

We took a trip up north to Vermont last weekend to visit friends, but also to do some leaf-peeping. It turns out that the oranges and yellow were gorgeous, but the deep reds were mostly gone. And when we drove south again, toward home, we discovered the reds on full display. Our part of New England is just reaching its peak colors. What a gift!

Gratitude Spiral: Day 322

Today, I’m grateful for yesterday’s soaking rain.

For much of this year, New England has been suffering a drought. We’ve lacked a steady dose of rain, which has been hard on gardens and lawns, not to mention its effect on wells, or rivers & streams. Yesterday’s rain doesn’t erase the drought, but the thirsty ground sure had a good drink! And for that I’m grateful.

Gratitude Spiral: Day 305

Today, I’m grateful for a recent visitor on the front of my house.

This praying mantis hung around for most of the morning the other day — an impressive and slightly intimidating natural treasure.

Gratitude Spiral: Day 292

Today, I’m grateful for the eagerness of the birds while I’m filling the feeder.

They start to chatter as I open the stepladder. I can hear their excitement (or impatience) as I pour the seeds in. And they’re at the feeder before I’ve finished dragging the ladder away — chickadees, cardinals, woodpeckers, blackbirds, tufted titmice. Sometimes, I just stand and watch before folding up the ladder and putting it away. 🙂

Gratitude Spiral: Day 289

Today, I’m grateful for the leaves beginning to change color.

Here comes autumn in New England! The tops and tips of the neighborhood’s trees are showing red. Every morning, when I go for my walk, I can see the yellows and reds growing more abundant. Before we know it, those leaves will be falling and blowing, and summer will be a memory.

Gratitude Spiral: Day 285

Today, I’m grateful for a quiet Labor Day weekend.

In a normal year, this weekend would be busy with cookouts and get-togethers. Even if we weren’t hosting a party ourselves, there’d be neighborhood gatherings with lots of cars parked along the streets and lots of people coming and going. Instead, the summer is leaving the same way it arrived—in the midst of a pandemic. And life is quieter, in general.

Gratitude Spiral: Day 282

Today, I’m grateful for weeding.

No, not so grateful for the weeds themselves. But the act of weeding, pulling up crabgrass, roots and all, reveals what the garden is supposed to look like.  And it’s amazingly satisfying.

Gratitude Spiral: Day 268

Today, I’m grateful for Brandywine beefsteak tomatoes.

Some of the ripening tomatoes in my garden are literally a handful and a half! If I can deter the squirrels long enough, they turn a deep, meaty red. And they’re oh, so sweet!
