Gratitude Spiral: Day 299

Today, I’m grateful for a new patch on my old jeans.

I use an old pair of jeans for yard work. It keeps the rest of my jeans from growing holes. I’m not a big fan of holey jeans. I know, for some people it’s a fashion statement. For me, it’s just an unfortunate annoyance. So yesterday, I was thrilled that I was able to sew a large patch of newer denim over the thin, torn front of my old jeans—and to be able to sew the entire thing on my machine! I didn’t think it’d be possible, but it worked. And then I knelt on the ground for three hours, weeding. 🙂

Gratitude Spiral: Day 255

Today, I’m grateful for the stretch setting on my sewing machine.

You may find it hard to believe, but in thirty-plus years, I’ve never bothered to figure out how to use it. Wanting to make face masks out of old t-shirts motivated me to learn. All I had to do was pull out the machine’s instruction booklet and do a little reading. And the best part of all? It worked as well as it was supposed to. It just goes to show that we’re (I’m) never to old to learn something new. 🙂

Gratitude Spiral: Day 254

Today, I’m grateful for finding a mask pattern that fits my face.

When talk of wearing face coverings to slow the spread of Covid-19 began, I tried my hand (& sewing machine) at making masks. Success is a relative term. I’ve got plenty of fabric, but had no elastic, so I made masks with pleats and ties. Each one came out a bit different. I gave a few away to family members, but there was no mass production going on in my house. The pleats and the ties were a challenge for my machine. Then, I inherited some elastic from my mother. Still, making a well-fitting mask was a challenge. Then, I found a pattern that didn’t require pleats. Turned out to be a perfect fit for my face and my capabilities. 🙂

Gratitude Spiral: Day 165

Today, on this Mother’s Day, I’m grateful for my mother’s sewing cabinet.

It’s too big for my mother to bring to her new apartment, so the cabinet, made by my father in 1970, has a new home in my craft room, next to my sewing machine. I’m thankful for it and for all the use my mother got out of it as she made clothes for her five kids.

Today, I’m grateful for my sewing machine.

It’s been around for a few decades and hasn’t gotten much use lately. But here it is, all ready for me, just when I feel the need to make a few face masks. 🙂
