Gratitude Spiral: Day 123

Today, I’m grateful for new leaves beginning to unfurl.

These are on a bush outside my front door. One more sign that spring is here. 🙂

Gratitude Spiral: Day 122

Today, I’m grateful for daffodils blooming.

They always bring to mind my first boss, Mrs. Weston, who called them jonquils. I worked in a greenhouse in high school and had never heard the word “jonquils” before. Seeing them open in my own garden makes me a bit nostalgic. 🙂

Gratitude Spiral: Day 118

Today, I’m grateful for a spring snowstorm.

Its big, fat flakes accumulate on grass and cars and trees, but in the end it’s no match for the rising temperatures of spring. It’s also a nice change of scenery in the midst of social-distancing and keeping close to home.

Gratitude Spiral: Day 115

Today, I’m grateful for random crocuses that pop up in my backyard.

I planted them a long time ago in my front yard. Years of moving dirt around the yard as I changed the landscaping has scattered them. It’s always a surprise to find one or two in unexpected places.

Gratitude Spiral: Day 114

Today, I’m grateful for yesterday’s good soaking rain (instead of snow!) in the middle of March.

In New England, the spring bulbs are sprouting, the flowering bushes are just beginning to blossom, and the dry ground desperately needed a drink. 🙂

Today, I’m grateful for the first blossoms on the forsythia.

It catches me by surprise every year. And with snow in the forecast for today, it promises spring on the other side. 🙂

Gratitude Spiral: Day 91

Today, I’m grateful for this Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the season of Lent.

I heard once that Lent means “lengthening,” as in “the lengthening of days.” The sun comes up a little earlier and goes down a little later each day. Spring is coming. And in this season of reflection, just as minutes and hours of light are added to the days, let’s all add some minutes and moments of kindness, compassion, and gratitude, as well. 🙂

So, if you’re reading this, maybe you could leave a comment about what you’re grateful for today…

Gratitude Spiral: Day 85

Today, I’m grateful for windows.

Cold winter days, despite the occasional sunshine, keep me indoors where it’s warm. But that only increases my craving for the outdoors. My favorite window is the one above the kitchen sink. From there I can watch the birds at the feeder, gaze into the woods behind the house, and almost feel like I’m outside for a moment. And that will almost do ’til spring. Almost. 🙂
